M E T R O P O L I Sby MikeShawPhotography

Scraps©2011-2014 MikeShawPhotography
The Liver Buildings in Liverpool.

This is an experiment with long exposures and bleaching colours but I have to admit its one of those shots I'm just not sure of so its time to throw it out there before I move it to scraps :)

Tech Info:
Camera: Gripped Canon 7D
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm
Filters: Lee Big Stopper/Hitech 0.9ND soft grad
F-stop: f/11
Exposure time: 30sec
ISO: 100
Focal length: 10mm

Post editing:
Put through CS5 and sharpened in RAW, saved as a DNG file and put through Photomatix 3 and tone-mapped to drag as much detail out as possible. Put back through CS5 and selected colours either bleached or enhanced. Put through Lightroom 3 and luminance increased in bleached out colours, sharpened again and noise reduced.

I'm going to go against the grain of what I see in the comments on this piece and say that to my eye this shot is nothing special. The post-processing is far more interesting than the photograph itself; I think you could apply this processing chain to just about any snapshot and produce interesting and stark tonality.

Composition-wise, I think this shot is not the best. It feels rushed, without the usual care I see in your work. It feels cramped. I think this shot either needs to be opened up to embrace the surrounding structures, or needs to be brought in closer to isolate the main structure.

The sweep of the clouds produces some interest and action through the frame, but not enough to overcome the compositional deficit.

In the end, this one just doesn't tell me stories as well as most of your work does; you've done far, far better than this one. For you, I agree; this one really is a scrap :)
